What Is FIRE? Financial Independence, Retire Early
FIRE is a movement focused on aggressive saving and investing to achieve financial independence - the point where your investment portfolio can sustainably fund your living expenses indefinitely, regardless of traditional retirement age.
The 4% Rule Explained
The "4% rule" originates from the Trinity Study, suggesting that withdrawing 4% of your portfolio in the first year of retirement (adjusted for inflation each subsequent year) has historically had a high probability of lasting 30+ years without running out.
FIRE Variations
- Lean FIRE: Minimal expenses, smaller FIRE number, earlier achievement
- Fat FIRE: Higher expenses and lifestyle maintained, larger FIRE number required
- Coast FIRE: Enough invested that compound growth alone will reach full FIRE by traditional retirement age, without further contributions
- Barista FIRE: Enough to cover most expenses, supplemented by part-time work
Projections assume consistent 7% p.a. returns and do not account for market volatility, sequence of returns risk, taxes, or inflation. Not financial advice.
