How Retirement Income Works in Australia
Most Australians fund retirement through a combination of superannuation drawdown, the Age Pension (full or part), and any other personal savings or investments.
The Three Pillars of Retirement Income
- Superannuation: Your primary retirement savings vehicle, accessed via account-based pension or lump sum
- Age Pension: A means-tested government payment, available from Age Pension age (currently 67)
- Personal savings: Investment properties, shares, savings accounts outside super
The Age Pension Means Test
The Age Pension reduces as your assets and income increase, eventually phasing out entirely above certain thresholds. Many retirees with moderate super balances receive a part pension, supplementing their super drawdown.
